My Favorite Articles

I selected some of my earliest, and favorite works from my time at the Collegiate. From award winning to human interests.

This is one of the first articles where I broke out of my niche. Having the opportunity to get to learn more about Dr. French was an amazing experience. I feel that one of the most rewarding things about the article was getting the word out to the student body that outside of the classroom professors are real people. They've got amazing stories to tell. This is a feature that I certainly need to revive.

Typically, a reporter isn't supposed to show their bias, but this article does a bit of that. It tells the story of all the agony I've had supporting one of the biggest clubs in German soccer. For six straight years they got my hopes up, being so close to getting promoted, before falling at the last hurdle. While it wasn't my most read article, as it's quite long for a news story, it showcased my abilities as a storyteller.

If I had to choose my favorite sports article I've written, this one is it. Victors is special for personal reasons, but this championship meant more. Watching my peers go out and win a national title, then having the opportunity to sit down during their title celebration was great. To hear about the heartbreak the sophomores on that team suffered after losing in the title game the year before, and the culture they had built felt like the perfect cross over between a human interest story and a game wrap up.

This story hits home to me. It was a collaborative piece between two staff members and a student not on staff, and it explored a growing trend in higher education: men are disappearing. Hearing the stories of why some men are attending while others avoid it as a whole gave me a new insight on what those around me thought. I give special props to Alex who flat out said "I'm not confident enough to do it." That was heavy to read.
