I tried to stay off camera for most of my time at the paper, but I've led by example and created a greater role for myself. I've picked up skills from scriptwriting to how to look natural on camera as a result.
While I'm not a photographer by trade, I've begun to understand what makes a good photo, and what doesn't. Taking photojournalism last year certainly improved my skills, and learning what makes a good photo changed the way I looked at most photography. Sports photography is certainly my favorite thing to shoot, but I've taken photos of things that catch my eye, what I think looks pretty, or anything we need for promotional material at the paper.
In October, the Collegiate ran into a serious issue: our entertainment reporter was unable to continue filming the newscast. Being the Editor-In-Chief, I felt it was my duty to step in and do it. I'm not an entertainment guy at all, so I have no idea how I managed to get through the whole segment on my first take. I wrote my own script and learned a lot about how a studio actually works.
After a month or so, we made another change. Our main anchor was struggling with some of the more difficult news related words, and she requested a change to entertainment. I accepted the move and this was my first newscast as the main anchor. While I got through my first newscast in one take, this one wasn't as easy. I learned quickly that big words are indeed hard. I continue anchoring our weekly newscast to this day.
Entertainment? News? But you're the sports guy! You're right, and that's where "Collegiate Versus" came in. The concept is a "Pros vs Joes" style video where the staff try and compete with student athletes. In this one? I was the star, being the only Collegiate member to get the ball over the net. We're looking to continue the series against baseball, so stay tuned!
Radio was always something I had an interest in but never had a story that I felt justified getting put on there. With a lot of encouraging from a member of the station, and my experience in working on a podcast, I broke into the radio business.
Finally, I stepped up and did a radio piece this semester. Saginaw was selected to be the home for the new Arena Football 1 franchise "Michigan Arsenal" the owner of the franchise took the time to interview with the Collegiate, and we turned it into a radio piece getting the word out about the team. It aired on Delta's NPR station.
